Deep Blue and white dish with a peacock in a rocky landscape

JVV 0644

Delft, circa 1690

The deep dish has a protruding wall with a turned over outer rim, painted in blue with a peacock in a rocky landscape with plants and flowers. The decor is framed by a circle and a white band. The wall of the dish is decorated with a continuous frieze of swans, plants and flowers.

Dimensions: diameter 33.5 cm / 13.3 in., height 6.3 cm / 2.5 in.

Explanatory note
Rocky landscapes featuring peacocks and other birds were originally derived from Chinese porcelain and were frequently produced in Delft and other manufacturing centres during the second half of the seventeenth century. This design was used at the Meissen porcelain factory around 1720–1725 for the earliest pieces of underglaze blue porcelain.
